Moon Canoe came into being in late 2017 as a collaboration between musician and electronic sound designer Graeme Rhodes and visual artist Chrissie Ianssen.
Each hand made Moon Canoe ‘device’ is the result of countless hours of experimentation and refinement that stems from a passionate desire to make something that looks beautiful, sounds amazing and is accessible to everyone.
The boxes don’t have to be programmed or plugged into anything. Just switch them on and play. They can sit like a book on a coffee table or shelf and anyone can bring them to life. They’re there to get lost in, for a minute or an hour. There’s a quote by Brian Eno that sums it up perfectly.
“I’m most interested in ….. trying to create a situation within which you can experience some kind of surrender, where you stop being “you” for a little while. You stop thinking about you and your particular life and existence and the laundry you didn’t pick up and the coffee you want to get, and for a little while, you surrender to something, you become immersed in it. I think it’s the most important thing you can do, sometimes.”
Our boxes are owned by musicians, beatboxers, sound performance artists, noise bombers and those who just like to journey occasionally into the outer reaches of the sonic universe.
